Philippi
A major city in northeastern Macedonia, an area that is now part of Greece. Philippi was a Roman colony. Many retired Roman soldiers lived there, and the people had all the legal rights of Roman citizens. This city was the first place in Europe to hear the gospel. Paul went to Philippi on his second missionary journey after God sent him a vision of a Macedonian man asking for help.
