Thought
After years of choosing their own way, the Israelites were finally ready to listen to the prophet Samuel. Samuel invited them to march to the city of Mizpah so they could all repent and pray together. However, the Philistines heard of this march and thought the Israelites were making plans to attack! At Mizpah, the Israelites built an altar to God. But they heard the Philistines coming, and Samuel offered a sacrifice to God and prayed for God’s help. A sudden storm broke out, and the Philistines fled for their lives! As a way to remember God’s help, Samuel created a stone monument and called it an Ebenezer, which means “stone of help.” When we turn away from our sin and ask forgiveness, we are choosing to follow and worship the only true God. No matter what we face, God is with us and can help us when we ask for it.
