Thought

Do you think the singer/songwriter/shepherd boy ever imagined one day he would be playing his songs to comfort a king? David liked to sing to keep himself company while he was out in the fields. And centuries later, many of us are still reading those songs in the Book of Psalms. Often, when we use our talents—taking care of what God has given us—He surprises us by leading us to places we never dreamed we would go. The Lord used David’s natural gifts for music to lead him to a place of influence in Saul’s house. God prepared David ahead of time, first to serve the king of Israel and then later to serve as the king of this nation. God can call us to serve Him in unexpected ways.

Word

Ephesians 2:10 NIV

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Question

What helps you when you are upset?

If you were called to soothe a troubled leader, what gifts of your own would you use to bring comfort? Make a list of all the things you can do to entertain someone or get their mind off a problem.

Challenge

Write a peaceful song or poem. You can use words or just compose a tune. Share your music with at least one other person. Or, if you don’t feel like creating your own music, share a song that makes you feel calm.

Prayer

Dear God, keep me willing to serve You in any way You want. I long to use the talents You’ve given me for good works. Amen.
