Thought

Jesus’ treatment was cruel and violent. Jesus endured beatings, whippings, and a crown of thorns being shoved onto His head. Even though Pilate wanted to let Jesus go, he bowed to the will of the people by sentencing Jesus to death. In contrast to Pilate’s weak leadership and lack of courage, Jesus stood strong before His accusers, spoke the truth, and allowed Himself to be sacrificed for the sins of the very world He had created and controlled.

Word

John 19:19 NIV

Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews.

Question

Why did Pilate want to let Jesus go?

Matthew 27:11–26 gives some more context to the discussion that happened between Pilate and Jesus and between Pilate and the crowd. What are some reasons you see that Pilate wanted to let Jesus go?

Challenge

Leading up to the time of celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, many Christians focus on the sacrifice He made for us by using what are known as the “Stations of the Cross.” These are either images or written reflections (or both) pertaining to Jesus’ trial, punishment, crucifixion, death, and burial. The idea is that they reflect the journey of Jesus from His sentence to His death and burial. People think on each of 14 events and pray, talking to God about the meaning of these moments in Jesus’ story, and seeking to understand more about God and about their relationship with God through this time. Consider thinking on these 14 events or asking your family to spend time reflecting on them together. Look at the traditional stations provided for you here.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for being an example for us of what true courage looks like, and thank You for making a way for us to stand with You forever. Amen.
