When a new Herod came to power, he wanted to please the Jewish leaders. He thought that hurting the followers of Jesus would make them happy, so he had James, John’s brother, killed, and he threw Peter in prison, waiting to kill him too. Some of Peter’s friends were praying for him, and God heard their prayer. He sent an angel to free Peter, and when Peter came to his friends’ house, they could hardly believe it was him! Sometimes God answers our prayers in surprising ways—ways we might never expect.
