Some of the religious leaders didn’t like that Jesus ate with people they considered sinners. But Jesus tried to explain to them that God cared about the ones who were lost and needed to be found. He told two stories, one about a lost lamb, and the other about a lost coin, to try to help them see how much God loves sinners. Just like God loved sinners back then, He still loves us today, and He rejoices with His angels whenever people who are “lost” in sin find out how much He loves them.
