Thought

God appeared to Manoah and his wife in an astonishing way, but the wife and soon-to-be mother of Samson was wise not to fear for their lives. She knew that God had accepted their offering and given them a promise of a son who would lead Israel out of the hands of the Philistines. And as long as Samson obeyed God’s plan for his life as a Nazirite, he led with wisdom. Those who wish to be wise should first obey God, and those who obey God gain more wisdom.

Word

Isaiah 12:2 NIV

“Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.”

Question

What did Manoah have to do?

The angel of the Lord told Manoah’s wife that she would give birth to a son. What did the angel say that she had to do, and what did the angel say would or should happen with the boy?

Challenge

Samson is a good example of a very flawed person whom God worked through to bring about good for His people. Go back and read carefully through Judges 14. See what choices Samson made that put him in danger of disobeying God. Look up Numbers 6:1–21 to see what the vow of the Nazirite involved.

Prayer

God, I’m so thankful that I can depend on You to give me strength. Amen.
