Thought

Abram couldn’t understand how his descendants would be as many as the stars in the sky when his wife had been unable to birth even one child. But the God who placed every star in the sky has everything in control. We can have faith that He will fulfill His promises.

Word

Genesis 17:1–2 NIV

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

Question

Are constellations mentioned in the Bible?

There are a few different mentions of particular stars or groups of stars in the Bible, but scholars debate what they all mean. The prophet Amos clearly names two star groups in Amos 5:8: “He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns midnight into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land—the Lord is his name.”

Challenge

Go out on a clear night, put a blanket on the ground, and look at the stars. Try to count some of them. How high can you go? As you look at each star, notice any that stand out to you. Then thank God for every star He put in the sky.

Prayer

God of the universe who set the stars in the sky, help me to remember that You are bigger than any of my troubles, and that I can always depend on You. Amen.
