Thought

When Jesus heard that His friend Lazarus had died, He knew that He would raise him from the dead and that God would be glorified. But when Jesus saw Mary and Martha, Lazarus’s sisters, and He felt their grief, Jesus wept. He mourned with His friends because He also loved their brother, and their sadness was enough to make Him sad. And God still weeps with His children today, because when we grieve, He also grieves. In our sadness, God is there to comfort us.

Word

John 11:35–36 NIV

Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

Question

What did Martha think Jesus meant when he said that Lazarus would rise from the dead?

Did you know the Jewish people believed that at the end of time, everyone who has ever died would be resurrected? That’s what Martha thought Jesus was talking about when He told her Lazarus would rise from the dead.

Challenge

The next time you’re with someone who is grieving, sit and mourn with them the way Jesus would do.

Prayer

God, thank You for crying with us in our sadness. Amen.
