Thought

Paul and Barnabas came to a city called Lystra and performed miracles by the power of Jesus. When the people saw the miracles, they wanted to worship Paul and Barnabas as gods. But Paul and Barnabas directed their attention to Jesus. Unfortunately, some of their enemies came and stirred up trouble, and after turning the people of the city against them, Paul was stoned. But Paul was not killed, and he had the courage to return to the city before moving on. Paul was bold and courageous with God’s power, but he always gave God the glory.

Acts 14:15 NIV

Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.

Question

Why do you think Paul was stoned?

Stoning was a public punishment at that time, so everyone could see (and be warned about!) the consequences of what was presumed to be bad behavior. What do you think the people were being warned about from Paul’s stoning?

Challenge

Paul showed great courage when he continued to preach about Jesus even after he was persecuted. He knew God’s Word well and relied on God’s faithfulness. Find a Bible verse that reminds you to be courageous, and write it down. Keep it with you to help you remember that God is faithful and His Word can give you courage.

Prayer

God, please help me to be courageous, like Paul, and share Your Word with others, even when it’s difficult to do. Amen.
