Thought

During Bible times, people sometimes cast lots—or left things to chance—to make decisions. In the story of Saul, people cast lots to find out who the next chosen king would be. Of course, God already knew that Saul would be the next king, and Samuel had already anointed Saul. Today we don’t need to cast lots; we have the Holy Spirit to help us make decisions.

Word

1 Samuel 8:7

And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.”

Question

What “casting lots” means?

So, what is casting lots? It’s sort of like flipping a coin to see who wins—where one person chooses heads and the other tails. Or it’s like drawing straws—where whoever picks the short straw is the chosen one.

Challenge

The people wanted a king who they could know and see on earth. It wasn’t enough for them to have God as their King. Think about some things or people who you might give more attention to than you do to God. What can you do to remember to focus on God and go to Him for direction?

Prayer

God, I’m so glad You are the Lord and King of all I do and all I am. Help me to remember that and not turn away from You. Amen.
