Thought

Solomon began his reign with a very wise step: he started with prayer. Asking the all-knowing God to give him wisdom to govern was the best thing he could have done. Because of his humility, God granted Solomon wisdom—and riches and honor as well! This gift of godly wisdom allowed Solomon to understand God’s plan and desires for His people. It also allowed him the ability to understand the desires of his people and to see when their motivations were based on greed instead of goodness. Asking God for wisdom is not just a good idea for kings. It’s the best idea for anyone who wants to understand God’s will (and other humans) more.

Word

Proverbs 16:2 NIV

All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.

Question

If you were a leader of a country, what would you ask God for?

Make a list of the top 10 things you would want so you could be a great leader.

Challenge

Take your list of top 10 things you’d request from God and share it with a family member or friends. Get their ideas for what they would add to or change about your list. After you’ve talked it over, take a look at your list again. Did you make changes? Now think about what you’d ask God to grant you just to be a good human. Does that change anything about your list?

Prayer

Lord, Solomon was the wisest man ever (besides Jesus, of course). Pour out Your wisdom on me so that I may learn Your ways as Solomon did. Amen.
