Thought

After Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting (not eating food), His body probably felt weak, and Satan saw that as the perfect opportunity to tempt Him. Three times Satan told Jesus to do something, and each time Jesus responded with Scripture. Jesus knew that the best defense against the Devil’s temptation was to meet it with Scripture, and that is still our best defense against Satan’s lies today.

Word

Matthew 4:4 NIV

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Question

Where did scripture come from in Jesus‘ time?

Did you know that all the Scripture that Jesus and the apostles knew came from what we know as the Old Testament? Their Bibles weren’t bound up in a nice book format like ours. They had to gather a bunch of individual scrolls to read the Word of God!

Challenge

Find a couple of Scripture passages to memorize this week. The book of Psalms is full of some good ones that help us replace Satan’s lies with God’s truth!

Prayer

God, thank You for giving us Your Word so we can memorize it and have a strong defense against the Devil’s lies. Amen.
