Thought

The story of Achan’s sin and its consequences for the Israelites at Ai echoes the story of the fall of Adam and Eve and the effect their sin had on all humans. It’s important to remember that no sin escapes God’s sight and that no sin goes without consequences. Our sin affects who we are, our relationship with God, and our relationships with others. But God is gracious and created a way for us to be made right through His Son Jesus. We can have courage to confess our sins and come before Him because Jesus has taken on the punishment of our sin, and He will restore us to a right relationship with God.

Word

Joshua 7:13 NIV

“Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

Question

What was Achan's root problem?

Achan’s disobedience held Israel back from victory. His actions indicated a lack of trust and reliance on God. Examine your life and ask yourself: What is holding me back from having complete trust in God?

Challenge

Go back and read Joshua 6:15–19 to find out what Joshua’s instruction was to Israel regarding the devoted things of Jericho.

Prayer

God, help me read and learn Your Word every day so that I will know how to live. And when I make bad choices, God, help me to have courage to confess and come to You for forgiveness. Amen.
