Thought

Joseph loved his father greatly, but he also loved his brothers. After their father’s death, the brothers were afraid, thinking that perhaps their powerful brother would take this opportunity to turn against them. But they were wrong. Joseph was gracious toward his brothers and reassured them, promising to provide for them and their children. Real love does not keep a record of wrongdoing, but instead forgives and does what is right and good.

Word

Genesis 50:20 NIV

[Joseph said to his brothers,] “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

Question

Have you been to a funeral or seen one on television?

When Joseph’s father died, Joseph went to bury him, and all Pharaoh’s officials went with him, along with all his household and his father’s household. You may have attended or seen funerals taking place and funeral processions. What are some traditions that people in your family observe as a way to show love and respect toward people who have died? Why do you think these traditions are important?

Challenge

It’s important to show people we love them when they are still with us, rather than waiting to show respect after they die. Think of someone in your family or someone else you know whom you love, respect, and admire. Joseph observed seven days of mourning for his father. Take seven days to remember the person you love and do something each day to show that love to them. You might send a message, write a card, draw a picture, sing a song, make a small gift, plan time to visit, or do some act of service for them.

Prayer

God, help me to love others with Your grace and generosity. Amen.
