Rebekah was playing favorites in the worst way. In planning to trick her husband, she acted unfaithfully and offered a horrible example to her sons. She also acted unfaithfully toward God. When we make plans that are founded in greed and deceit, they often do not go the way we want.
May God give you heaven’s dew
and earth’s richness—
an abundance of grain and new wine.
Has anyone ever tricked you that way? How did that feel?
A father’s blessing was important in ancient Bible times as a way to transfer an inheritance, and it was also a significant honor. So much so that to miss out on a blessing could be considered the same as being cursed. Read over the blessings that Isaac gave his sons and then come up with your own forms of blessings to offer friends and family.
