Thought

Jericho, with its massive, fortified wall, was an important city in the Promised Land. It would be one of the more difficult cities for the Israelites to conquer. Joshua was a brand-new leader and had a challenge before him: Would he obey the Lord and have his soldiers and priests march around the walls for seven days? It was a moment designed to put his courage and that of the people he led to the test. God never promises our paths as His servants will be easy, but He does promise to be with us every step, just as God was with Joshua.

Word

Joshua 6:27 NIV

So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

Question

Who in the city of Jericho was also in Jesus’ family tree?

Jericho is known as the first walled city in history. Historians say the walls were 3 meters wide (almost 10 feet) and more than 4 meters high (about 13 feet). As a key city in the land and the first city for the Israelites to battle since Joshua took charge, Jericho presented a significant challenge. But it was important for another reason: Who in the city of Jericho was also in Jesus’ family tree?

Challenge

Before Joshua and the Israelites even took a step toward Jericho, God told Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands” (Joshua 6:2). God had already won the battle for them! Think about a hard thing that you are facing: maybe you have a big test coming up or a tough competition or a conflict with a friend. Pray and ask God to be with You through this challenge. Then step out with courage, knowing God is with You!

Prayer

God, please help me have courage in the face of powerful challenges. Remind me that You know my every step before I even take it. Amen.
