Thought

Elijah could have courage when facing the powerful and wicked rulers because he knew that he served God alone and could depend on Him to provide for his needs—even the need to run from plots to kill him! We can rely on courage from God; He will fill us up when we need it most.

Word

Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Question

Who did people think was Elijah?

Elijah is definitely an important character in the Old Testament, and he has some notable mentions in the New Testament as well. Who did people in the New Testament think might be Elijah? (Hint: Read Luke 9:18–19.)

Challenge

Pack a simple picnic and go outside (if you can) to eat a meal today. Your picnic can be plain bread, chicken or turkey lunch meat, and water. Imagine what it must have been like to be in Elijah’s place: with powerful people wanting to kill you and being sent to stay in a desert ravine, waiting for scavenging ravens to bring you food!

Prayer

Dear God, I trust You to give me courage when I feel afraid. Amen.
