Thought

Jesus had died, been resurrected, and ascended into heaven, and the disciples were left behind to continue the work Jesus had started. They gathered together in prayer, and they chose a replacement for Judas. They didn’t just sit around while they waited for the Holy Spirit; they served. Just like the disciples, we can serve while we wait for further direction from God!

Word

Acts 1:8 NIV

[Jesus said,] “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Question

What does the word "apostle" mean?

The title “apostle” was given to those who were sent on a mission from God to carry the message of the gospel. Eleven of the original disciples chose Matthias as a replacement for Judas. After that, Paul became an apostle. How would you describe the role of the apostles?

Challenge

Praying individually can be powerful, and it’s also powerful and valuable to pray with others. Find two or three other believers and meet together to pray for one another. Ask God to give one another strength and courage to share His message with others.

Prayer

God, thank You for the opportunities to serve You while we wait for Your guidance. Amen.
