Thought

Jerusalem was in danger. The Jews’ enemies had their backs against a wall—except there wasn’t one! The walls around the city of Jerusalem had been destroyed. God loved His people enough to bring them a praying leader to oversee fixing the wall. God blessed the efforts of the people who rebuilt the city’s gates and wall. Nehemiah is an example of staying faithful and obeying, even during hard times.

Word

Nehemiah 9:17 NIV

They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,

Question

What was the significance of walls around cities in the Bible?

Walls were there for protection and as a sign of the city’s strength. Jerusalem was God’s people’s city, and the walls had been destroyed 100 years earlier by the Babylonian king. The Babylonians also destroyed the temple, which was rebuilt by Ezra.

Challenge

Nehemiah showed great faith and obedience when he rebuilt the walls around Jerusalem. Use blocks to build a small wall. As you stack each block, thank God for His love, grace, and strength. Pray and ask Him to strengthen your faith.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for giving me strength and protection. Help me live in obedience to You. Amen.
