Thought

There will always be people, like the Romans, who want to make us do things that don’t feel fair. But we can trust that God will deliver us when we seek to please Him, and He will grow His hope in our hearts. In the meantime, we should do as Jesus taught and serve with gladness, waiting hopefully for His justice to prevail.

Word

Matthew 5:41 NIV

If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

Question

What does it mean to “go the extra mile”?

Did you know that in Jesus’ day Roman law allowed a Roman soldier to force a Jewish person to serve him for a whole mile? So when Jesus told His listeners to go not one mile but two miles, He was telling them to do more than they were required to do, even if it wasn’t fair.

Challenge

Walk a whole mile with a friend or family member.

Prayer

God, please help me to have the right attitude when things don’t feel fair. I want to do as Jesus taught and go above and beyond what I’m asked to do. Amen.
