Ananias of Jerusalem

Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, sold a piece of their land and pretended they were giving the church all the money they received from it. They kept some of the money. When Ananias presented the money to the apostles, Peter confronted him with his lie, and Ananias fell down dead. Later Sapphira appeared, repeated the same lie—and she too died. The story shows that their sin was in lying to the Holy Spirit rather than in keeping part of the money.
