Exodus, the

The time when the people of Israel left slavery in Egypt to go to the Promised Land of Canaan. The Israelites left from Rameses in Egypt and went to Succoth. Succoth was about thirty-two miles southwest of Rameses. They avoided the land of the Philistines along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, which would have been the closest route to Canaan.

After they crossed the Red Sea, the people of Israel went into the wilderness of Shur and came to a place called Marah. This was an oasis in the Sinai Desert about halfway down the coast. They camped at Mount Sinai, in the southern part of the peninsula, for about a year. They wandered between Mount Sinai and Kadesh Barnea for forty years.
