Gospels

The first four books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each one tells about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Information about the life of Jesus was spread by word of mouth, but the growing community of believers needed a more permanent record of Jesus’s words and actions. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the “synoptic” Gospels. Synoptic means “seen together.” These three accounts tell many of the same things, sometimes in ways that are very much alike.
