John, gospel of

Written by John, one of Jesus’s disciples, when John was an old man. It was probably the last of the four gospels to be written. The apostle John tells many things about the life of Christ that the other three do not. Most of John’s gospel is about Jesus’s teachings, travels, and miracles in Judea. These are some of the miracles that are described only in the gospel of John: turning water into wine at a wedding (2:1–11); healing a lame man at the pool of Bethesda (5:1–15); healing the man who had been blind from birth (9:1–41); and raising Lazarus from the dead (11:1–44). John’s gospel also tells many teachings of Jesus that are not in the other gospels, including Jesus’s identifying Himself as the Bread of Life (6:25–59) and the Good Shepherd (10:1–18).
