Kiriath Jearim

A fortress-like city about twelve miles west of Jerusalem. About 1050 BC the Philistines captured the ark of the covenant in a battle with the Israelites. Later they returned it to Kiriath Jearim. The ark stayed in a specially built house for twenty years, until King David and many of the people of Israel brought it back to Jerusalem.
