Lord’s Day/Sabbath

The weekly day of rest and worship and the day set aside to honor Jesus. It was observed on the seventh day of the week (Saturday). Because Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week (Sunday), many early Christians used that day to worship and remember Him. The idea of the Sabbath goes back to creation. The Bible mentions that God “rested” from all His work on the seventh day of creation. This is why keeping the Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments given to Moses. God meant for the Sabbath to be a day of rest, worship, and remembrance that He brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt. Pharisees and scribes tried to clarify what could and could not be done on the Sabbath. Jesus regularly worshipped in the synagogue on the Sabbath. He sometimes ignored the long list of the Pharisees’ rules if they interfered with helping people. He healed people on the Sabbath, although the Pharisees thought healing was “work” and thus was against the Law.
