Matthew

A tax collector and one of Jesus’s disciples. He was also called Levi. He wrote the first book of the New Testament, the gospel of Matthew. He was well prepared to write a story of Jesus’s life, because tax collectors were skilled at writing and keeping records. Also, as a disciple, Matthew was with Jesus during Jesus’s ministry. Matthew met Jesus while he was collecting taxes for King Herod Antipas in Galilee. Jesus walked up to him and said, “Follow me.” Matthew immediately left his business.
