Prison
A place where a person accused or convicted of a crime was held. In ancient times, people were sometimes put in prison simply because they could not pay their debts. Joseph, son of Jacob, was thrown in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Often the prisoners in Bible times were beaten and then placed in chains or stocks. Often their food was only bread and water. Sometimes a prisoner who had not been proved guilty but was awaiting own house with guards to watch him. This was true of Paul in Rome.
