Resurrection, the
Jesus’s return to
life after His death on the cross. Many people saw Jesus die, and a Roman soldier even used a sword to pierce His side to be sure He was dead. He was buried in a tomb with guards posted outside to be sure no one could steal the body. Because Jesus died near sundown on the day that would begin the Sabbath, the burial customs could not be completed that day or the next day. So on the third day some of the women who were His friends returned to put burial spices on Jesus’s body. But there was no body! Instead, they found angels, who told them that Jesus was alive once more. Soon after, the risen Jesus appeared several times to His disciples. They touched Him and ate with Him and assured themselves that He was truly alive.
