Shield

Shields (sometimes called bucklers) were large or small objects that soldiers carried to protect themselves from the spears and swords of enemies. Shields were usually wickerwork (thin, flexible twigs woven together) or leather stretched over a wooden frame. The leather was oiled before battle to preserve it or to make it glisten.
