Showbread/Holy Bread

Twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The loaves were placed on a special gold-covered table in the tabernacle (later the temple) each Sabbath by the priests. This bread was also called the “bread of the Presence,” referring to the presence of God. The twelve loaves were arranged in two rows on a table in the Holy Place of the tabernacle or temple. When fresh loaves were brought each Sabbath, the old loaves were removed and could be eaten only by the priests. David and his hungry men, however, ate these special loaves while on the run from Saul.
