Son of God

A title used in the New Testament to show that Jesus was the unique Son of God—born of the Holy Spirit. Although Jesus did not describe Himself as the Son of God, He agreed when others called Him that. At Jesus’s baptism, and also on the Mount of Transfiguration, a voice from heaven said, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11 esv).

Jesus taught the disciples that His relationship to God was different from their relationship to God. He often spoke of “My Father” rather than “our Father.” Only when He taught the disciples to pray did He say, “Our Father.” The gospel of John and the letters of John often speak of Jesus as God’s Son. Paul spoke of Jesus as the Son of God in his preaching and his letters.
