Thessalonica

The chief seaport of Macedonia. Sometimes called Salonika, it is now the second-largest city in modern Greece. In New Testament times it was an important trade city. Paul visited here on a missionary journey, but had to leave after three weeks because of persecution. However, the church he started there grew vigorously. He later sent Timothy to Thessalonica to help the new Christians.
