Tower of Babel

A place where people began speaking different languages after God was displeased with them. At the time of the building of the tower, everyone spoke one language. The people tried to build a tower to the heavens. Their idea was to make a ziggurat—a tower with a series of levels, one on top of the other, each smaller than the one below it. At the top of such ziggurats was usually a shrine to a god. But God caused them to speak different languages so they could no longer understand one another. The people had no choice but to stop working on the tower. Many scholars believe the tower of Babel was in Babylon, located in what is now Iraq.
