Witness

A person who tells the truth about what he has seen and knows no matter what it costs. The word martyr comes from the Greek word meaning “witness.” A witness was to speak the truth in court. Another type of witness is someone who tells others the truth about Jesus.

The Ten Commandments includes a rule against “bearing false witness.” This means lying. Queen Jezebel found men who would be false witnesses in order to steal the vineyard of Naboth. The men who told lies at Jesus’s trial also were false witnesses. God wants His people to be His witnesses about Jesus. The disciples were eyewitnesses to the death and resurrection of Jesus, and they told about it. When Jesus was taken into heaven, He told the disciples that they were to be His witnesses to the end of the earth.
