Zacchaeus

The chief Jewish tax collector in Jericho during the time of Jesus. Zacchaeus was so short he had to climb a tree to see above the crowds and look at Jesus as He walked past. Jesus surprised Zacchaeus by stopping beneath the tree to announced that He would be staying at Zacchaeus’s house. The crowds were surprised that Jesus would go to the house of a tax collector. But Zacchaeus showed his sorrow over his past wrong actions by giving half of his riches to the poor and repaying those he had cheated with four times the original amount.
