Kinsman-Redeemer

A goel—a person, sometimes a relative—who paid the price to buy a slave his freedom. This person also was obligated to avenge the murder of a relative and marry the wife of his dead brother if that brother died before they had a son. After marriage, the firstborn son would be heir of the dead brother. The law of Moses had rules about kinsman-redeemers. Boaz was a kinsman-redeemer who married Ruth.
