Moab

The land east of the Dead Sea. Moses died on Mount Pisgah in Moab. Joshua was chosen on the nearby plains to be Israel’s next leader. Some events in the book of Ruth took place in Moab, and Ruth was from this country. This story took place in a time of peace between Israel and Moab. But trouble began again around 850 BC. King Ahab demanded heavy tribute (a kind of tax) from Mesha, the king of Moab. Mesha rebelled, and Jehoram, king of the northern kingdom, and Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, defeated Moab and ruined the land. Moab never again became a strong nation.
