Caesarea Philippi
An ancient town in northern Israel where Herod the Great built a temple in honor of Augustus Caesar. Herod’s son, Philip, enlarged the town and named it Caesarea Philippi so it would not be confused with another Caesarea, the larger city on the coast. While preaching in this area, Jesus asked His disciples who they thought He was. The mountain on which the transfiguration took place was probably in this area.
