Commandment

A rule given by God or a person in authority that must be obeyed. God gave the people of Israel the Ten Commandments to show how He wanted them to live. The first four commandments discuss how people should live in relationship to God. The last six discuss how people should live with each other. God called Moses to the top of Mount Sinai early in the Israelites’ journey from Egypt. On two tablets of stone, God wrote these rules as part of the agreement between God and His people.

When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus named two: to love God and to love one’s neighbor.
