Joppa
An ancient seaport very near where Israel’s largest city—Tel Aviv—now stands. Joppa is now called Jaffa and is a suburb of Tel Aviv. The old Joppa was a walled city that existed before the time of Moses. Here, Jonah caught a ship for Tarshish when he was trying to run away from God’s command. Joppa is mentioned in the New Testament as the city where Peter raised Tabitha to life. It was also where Peter saw a vision that made him realize the gospel was for Gentiles as well as Jews.
